Mohanlal, who is currently basking in the success of Thudarum, has been the pillar of strength in Malayalam cinema for more than four decades. The Lucifer star, who has worked with some of the stalwarts of Malayalam cinema during the 1980s, continues to amaze audiences with his latest outings. Now, the Complete Actor has commented about what makes Malayalam cinema a unique voice in Indian cinema, working with the new-age directors and why he cannot call a film as ‘bad’.

Mohanlal on why he cannot call a film as ‘bad’

Mohanlal recently attended the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai. After Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who moderated the session, called Malayalam cinema the ‘intellectual soul’ of Indian cinema, the veteran star explained what makes the industry stand out.

Mohanlal commented that it is a thin line between mass entertainers and art house films in Malayalam. Commenting that he got to work with stalwarts such as Bharathan and Padmarajan early on in his career, Mohanlal said that Malayalam cinema has always had rich content and which is the case even now.

“Content-wise, what the new directors (are making), it is full of art. I cannot call any film a bad film, it’s a beautiful piece of art,” commented Mohanlal, who recently collaborated with Tharun Moorthy on Thudarum and before that with Prithviraj Sukumaran on Empuraan. For both directors, these films marked their third directorial ventures. Mohanlal further remarked that this is his 47th year in cinema.

Mohanlal’s Thudarum, Empuraan

Mohanlal’s latest film Thudarum, which also starred Shobana, was released in theatres on Apr 25, 2025, opening to glowing reviews. The film is enjoying a good run at the box office, and has already crossed Rs 100 crore at the worldwide box office, the makers have claimed. 

Before Thudarum, Mohanlal starred in Empuraan, which also featured Prithviraj Sukumaran in a key role. Though the film faced significant backlash from right-wing supporters, it went on to rake in impressive collections.
