Malayalam filmmaker Tharun Moorthy is all of 3 films old, including the upcoming Mohanlal-starrer Thudarum, which releases in theatres on April 25, 2025. Tharun, who began his filmi journey with Operation Java , a crime thriller that focused on real-life cases of the cyber cell of the police force, followed that up with Saudi Vellakka, which came out in December 2022 and went on to win a National Award for Best Malayalam feature film.

Thudarum comes nearly 2 and a half years later, and was not even meant to be his third film. Tharun was approached by none other than Malayalam superstar Mammootty to explore the possibility of a collaboration. During a conversation with Kaumudy Movies, Tharun said that he had thought of a subject, but also realized that Mammootty was at a stage where he was experimenting with films and roles and polishing the actor in him to absolute brilliance. Over time, Tharun said that he did not find the subject he was considering for Mammootty not exciting enough, which he let the actor know.

It was then that Tharun was approached to direct a story that Mohanlal had taken a liking to. When the filmmaker heard the thread of the plot, he felt that it would present a version of Mohanlal onscreen that he himself would love to see as a member of the audience. That’s how he came onboard and worked on the screenplay of Thudarum, which he describes as a family drama. Thudarum is Mohanlal's second release of the year, after L2: Empuraan, the sequel to Lucifer

Tharun adds that he hopes that a film with Mammootty will also happen in due course of time. “Actors like Mohanlal and Mammootty are absolute legends and getting to direct them, is, for someone like me, a major accomplishment. I really hope I can work out a film with Mammootty, but I need a subject that excites me just as much as Thudarum. I have broached this with several people including writers to actively look for a subject that I can do with Mammootty,” he says.
