Both critics and audiences haven’t stopped raving about the soundscape of Mohanlal’s latest film Thudarum, which is running to packed houses in Kerala. The movie, which has great performances from its lead cast of Mohanlal, Prakash Varma and Binu Pappu and a brilliant screenplay, is also elevated by its music, thanks to its composer Jakes Bejoy.
The music director, who had already composed the soundtrack and background score for films such as Tovino Thomas’ Identity and Kunchacko Boban’s Officer On Duty this year, shared a glimpse of what went into crafting the soundscape for Thudarum.
Jakes Bejoy on Thudarum's metaphorical references & world setting
Sharing a collage of Mohanlal, Prakash Varma and Binu juxtaposing it with an elephant, a king cobra and a wolf, Jakes asked those watching the film again in theatres to look out for certain elements. “Look out for the metaphorical references in the characters – both in music and sound wise (sic). Kombu/chenda for Lalettan, Nagapattu/dissonant violin motifs for George sir and wolf howl for Benny aka Binu Pappu, he wrote, adding that it is “A Tharun Moorthy world setting”. Jakes also wrote that the track Pemari and other folk vocals used throughout the movie is a "cry of the mother forest herself".
Jakes and Tharun had previously collaborated for the filmmaker’s debut venture, Operation Java, and it’s no wonder that the latter responded to the post, saying, “Jakes Bejoy – the companion.”

Mohanlal-starrer Thudarum promo song Kondattam to out soon
Meanwhile, the filmmaker also teased on Tuesday that the duo will be releasing the much-anticipated promo track from the film, which is titled Kondattam. Fans have been eagerly waiting for the song of the movie, which its singer MG Sreekumar has already hyped, saying it would match up to the excitement of Velmuruga Haro Hara from Naran.
Thudarum has already broken several box office records and is expected to be Mohanlal’s second Rs 100 Cr grosser this year, after Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Empuraan. The drama-thriller, which is co-scripted by KR Sunil and Tharun, revolves around a former stuntman-turned-taxi driver, whose family life is upended after his cherished vehicle is impounded by cops for no fault of his own.
