Vikky was initially only meant to act in Kaalapatthar

Kaalapatthar was written by D Satya Prakash, famed for films like Rama Rama Re , Ondalla Eradalla and Man of the Match, with Vikky only meant to act in it, along with Apoorva, who starred in V Ravichandran’s Apoorva in 2016. However, during the pandemic, the film was temporarily stalled and when the team got back together to take it on floors, Vikky, who has assisted filmmakers Yogaraj Bhat and Suri, decided to take on the responsibility of direction as well.

By then, Apoorva was also replaced, with Dhanya Ramkumar, the granddaughter of late matinee idol Dr Rajkumar and daughter of veteran actor Ramkumar, taking up the heroine’s role. The film was shot majorly in Bijapur, the film also features segments in Rajasthan and Kashmir, with cinematography by Sandeep Kumar and music by Anoop Seelin.

Starring TS Nagabharana, Achyuth Kumar, Sampath Maithreya, Rajesh Nataranga, Basu Hiremath, among others, Kaalapatthar received fairly positive reviews, with many praising the actor-director for his choice of subject. Vikky played Shankara a BSF jawan, toiling away in the barracks’ kitchen, in the hope of one day making it to the frontline. When he successfully foils an infiltration bid, he not only gets posted to outdoor duty, but is also feted back home with a life-size statue.
