With the onset of summer, Tamil cinema will be witnessing some of the big releases in the second half of the year. Films like Coolie, Thug Life and Idly Kadai are gearing up for releases in theatres. Retro – Theatres (May 1)

Retro is an upcoming romantic action drama headlined by Suriya. The ensemble cast also includes Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, and others. The film is written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj in his first collaboration with the Vaaranam Aayiram star. Retro has music by Santhosh Narayanan and is touted to be about a former gangster who becomes reformed, only to be pulled back into his violent ways.

Tourist Family – Theatres (May 1)

Tourist Family is directed by debutant Abishan Jeevinth and stars Petta actors Sasikumar and Simran in the lead roles. It revolves around a Sri Lankan Tamil family who move to India illegally in order to have a better life and a fresh start. Yogi Babu, MS Bhaskar, Ilango Kumaravel, Mithun Jai Shankar and others are also part of the film, which has music scored by Sean Roldan.

Blue Star – SunNXT / OTTplay Premium (May 1)

Blue Star is a 2024 sports drama directed by S. Jayakumar in his directorial debut. It stars Ashok Selvan, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Keerthi Pandian, Prithvi Rajan, Bagavathi Perumal, Elango Kumaravel and Lizzie Antony, among others. The film is set in Arakkonam and is about the caste politics at the local cricket games.

Paraman – SunNXT/ OTTplay Premium (May 1)

Paraman is a story about a farmer who is trying to save his land from land land-grabbing scheme which is rampant. As he has to fight the most powerful and also protect his family, the film deals with the struggles the farmer has to go through. It is directed by J Sabarish and stars VJ Archana, Jayachandran, and more.

Varunan - Aha Tamil / OTTplay Premium (May 1)

Varunan features an ensemble star cast including Dushyanth Jayaprakash, Gabriella Charlton, Radha Ravi, Charan Raj, among others. Written and directed by Jaayavelmurugan, the film revolves around the water politics and how violence takes the forefront among the groups who are fighting for the natural resource.

Bromance – SonyLIV / OTTplay Premium (May 1)

Bromance is a 2025 Malayalam adventure comedy written and directed by Arun D. Jose. It stars Arjun Ashokan, Mathew Thomas, Sangeeth Prathap, Mahima Nambiar, Shyam Mohan, Kalabhavan Shajohn and Bharath Bopanna. It revolves around two brothers. After one of them goes missing, the younger sibling has to go in search of him.
